Google AI Overviews for law firms: eligibility and content checklist
A law firm's page must be indexed and eligible for a Google Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Google also requires the site to be included through its Search generative AI control in Search Console. Check those conditions before commissioning more articles. Then improve a page that answers a real prospective client's question, with information the firm can verify. The workflow below separates technical checks, content decisions, and measurement so that an agency or firm administrator can assign each task to an owner.
First, identify which problem you have
“We don't appear in AI Overviews” can describe several different observations. Save the query, date, location context, and screenshot before drawing a conclusion.
| Observation | Next check | What to avoid concluding |
|---|---|---|
| Google did not show an AI Overview for the query | Record “no overview shown” separately from a visible overview that omitted the firm | That the firm's page was rejected |
| An overview appeared, but your site was not linked | Inspect the intended page's eligibility and save the actual sources | That one missing link proves a site-wide problem |
| Your page was linked, but your firm was not suggested for hire | Classify the citation and the answer separately | That a citation is automatically a recommendation |
| The page is excluded from indexing | Investigate the specific exclusion in URL Inspection | That a content rewrite will fix an indexing directive |
AI Overviews do not appear on every query, and Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews can return different responses and links. Keep them separate in your records. Google's AI feature documentation
Check the exact URL before the whole site
Choose one important public page: a substantive practice page, an attorney biography, or an office page. Write down the complete URL rather than testing only the homepage.
- Inspect its indexed status. In Search Console's URL Inspection tool, compare the indexed result with a live test. The live test evaluates current accessibility; it does not prove the page is already indexed. Save the Google-selected canonical and any exclusion reason. URL Inspection documentation
- Investigate unintended
noindex. Ask the web vendor to check both robots meta tags and theX-Robots-TagHTTP header. Google must be able to crawl a page to see itsnoindexrule. Do not apply a blanket removal: an account page or thank-you page may be intentionally excluded. Google's noindex guidance - Review snippet restrictions.

Robots metadata specification - Check the property's AI control. Open Search Console's Settings → Search generative AI. Check both the selected value and any inherited parent setting. Google's documentation states that the control became worldwide on August 31, 2026. A property's exclusion here is separate from a page's indexing status. Search generative AI control
The free crawler check is a useful first look at robots.txt. It does not inspect your private Search Console settings or certify page-level indexability. For the fuller explanation of publisher controls, read what AI operators document about using your content.
When a vendor says a problem is fixed, ask for the deployed URL and evidence from the live page. A changed CMS checkbox or a successful local preview is not evidence that the public response changed.
Build one page that earns its place on the site
The following is Briefly's editorial worksheet for a firm's content team. It is not a claim that Google rewards a particular template.
Start with one decision a prospective client needs to make. For example: “What happens at this firm's first estate-planning consultation?” The useful content comes from the firm's actual process, not from a rewritten generic definition of estate planning.
| Section in the brief | Material the firm should supply | Review owner |
|---|---|---|
| Who this consultation is for | Actual services and locations served; relevant limits | Responsible attorney |
| How the meeting works | Who attends, available formats, expected sequence | Intake team and attorney |
| How to prepare | The firm's own preparation checklist, checked for accuracy | Attorney |
| Fees and booking | Current consultation terms and how to request an appointment | Firm administrator |
| Who provides the service | Accurate attorney biography and relevant credentials | Attorney |
| Questions the team hears repeatedly | Anonymized recurring questions, without client details | Intake team and attorney |
| Legal explanations, if needed | Jurisdiction, authoritative supporting sources, and substantive review | Appropriately qualified attorney |
An empty field is a question to resolve with the firm. It is not a prompt to invent a reassuring answer. If consultation prices vary, explain the actual process for obtaining a quote. If a remote appointment is unavailable, do not add it because a competitor offers one.
This approach creates a page the intake team could send to a real prospective client. It also gives the editor a reason to retain each section. A page that cannot answer those practical questions is not improved merely by adding more variations of “estate planning lawyer near me.” Google's newer AI guide emphasizes useful original material and warns against producing a page for every query variation to manipulate visibility. Make the useful information easy to find
Link the page from the relevant practice-area hub and connect it to the appropriate attorney and office pages. Use link wording that describes the destination. Google recommends crawlable links and meaningful anchor text; the editorial goal is also practical: a reader should be able to find the person, place, and next step without guessing. Google's link guidance
Check the page on a phone. Can someone read the preparation list, understand the booking terms, and find the contact method? Keep essential information in readable page content instead of an unexplained image or a document that is difficult to use on mobile.
If structured data is present, verify it against what the page actually says. Google requires markup to represent visible content accurately. A valid markup test cannot establish that an office address or attorney affiliation is true. Structured data guidelines
The free local entity check can inspect identity and location declarations on selected pages. Treat the findings as items to verify, not a score predicting recommendations. Google documents no special AI schema requirement, and its current guide says llms.txt does not help or harm Google Search visibility because Search ignores it. Generative AI optimization guide
Measure the page, the answer, and the visit separately
Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for observed impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The documentation describes page, country, date, and device breakdowns. It states worldwide rollout on August 31, 2026, while its troubleshooting section still mentions access and insufficient impressions. An unavailable report should be recorded as unavailable, not as zero visibility. Generative AI report documentation
Maintain a small answer sample alongside that report. Use fixed queries, record which Google surface was tested, save the answer and links, and note whether the firm was cited or recommended. The AI citation audit supplies a worksheet for that investigation.
Keep three lines in the team's report:
- Technical change: what was corrected, on which URL, and when the public page was verified.
- Observed visibility: Search Console report, date window, page, and any saved answer examples.
- Visitor action: actual visits and useful actions recorded by your analytics or intake process, with attribution limitations stated.
Do not multiply impressions by an assumed case value. Do not claim a new citation caused a signed engagement. When a page changes and visibility later moves, report the sequence and other known changes; causation needs stronger evidence.
Use the free law-firm AI visibility report template to keep the work reviewable. The next useful outcome is a verified correction or a better client-facing page, followed by honest observation of what happened.
Briefly measures AI answers; it does not guarantee search placement or endorse attorneys. This checklist covers marketing and publishing operations, not legal advice.
